Frequently Asked Questions
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a value calculated from your weight and height. It provides a rough measure of body fatness and is used as a screening tool to identify weight categories that may lead to health problems. The formula is weight(kg) / height(m)².
The WHO defines a healthy (normal weight) BMI as 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
Not always. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and bodybuilders with high muscle mass often have a high BMI that incorrectly classifies them as overweight or obese. For these individuals, body fat percentage is a more accurate measure.
In imperial units: BMI = (weight in pounds / (height in inches)²) × 703. For example, a person who is 5'9" (69 inches) and 160 lbs has a BMI of (160 / (69²)) × 703 = 23.6.
